The Ithaca College/Longview Partnership: Opportunities for Campus Community Involvement

10/10/12

Ithaca College has had a very successful programmatic partnership with Longview, a retirement community located on Danby Road, for the past 13 years. There are many opportunities for members of the Ithaca College Community to become involved at Longview, including:

Presentations given from Summer 2012 to present include: President Rochon: How American Values Have Changed in Your Lifetime and Why; Cyndy Scheibe (Psychology) Media Constructions of Presidential Campaigns: What We’ve Learned from the Past and How We Can Make Sense of the Present;  Beth Ellen Clark Joseph (Physics) The OSIRIS-Rex NASA Asteroid Sample Return Mission; Carole Dennis & Graduate Students Maria Barton, Jamie Edelson, Jennifer Barratt and Jennifer Biondi (Occupational Therapy) Babies Driving Robots!  In November, Marian Brown (Special Assistant for Campus and Community Sustainability) will be giving an update to the residents on Ithaca College's Climate Action Plan.

Needed: Speakers for Spring 2013: Anyone who is interested in speaking at Longview during the spring semester, even if you are not ready to make a specific commitment at this time, should contact Chris Pogorzala, the IC/LV Coordinator. There is also a need for faculty who might be interested in offering ‘short courses’ (several presentations on a particular subject) at Longview.

On days that classes are in session there is a shuttle that provides transportation between Longview and the College. It runs about every 15 minutes from approximately 8:40 a.m. to 1:00 on MWF, and from 9:05 to 12:30 p.m. on Tu/Th with regular stops at the Center for Health Sciences and Textor.  This shuttle is available to members of both the Longview and Ithaca College Communities.  Chris Pogorzala can provide copies (electronic or paper) of the shuttle schedule and it is also posted on the Gerontology Institute web site (https://www.ithaca.edu/aging/longview/).
