Cyberbullying and Harassment - National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) Tip

10/19/12

Contributed by Kris Monroe

Cyberbullying refers to a number of activities that all constitute digital harassment.  It involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, intended to harm others. The best defense against harassment is to familiarize yourself with all effective use policies and laws and report, block, and ignore as necessary. The best guideline to follow is to absolutely avoid cyberharrassment at all costs: don’t bully anyone, don’t respond to any provocation, and report all instances you see.

See section 2.10 of our Policy Manual (https://www.ithaca.edu/policies/vol2/volume_2-210/) for more information on IC’s policies regarding cybersecurity. Section Three refers directly to cyberharassment, including spamming, intentionally spreading viruses, and abusing network resources. If you feel that you are being harassed by a member of the Ithaca College community, please contact the Computer Abuse Administrator at computer_abuse@ithaca.edu or call (607) 274-1000 or contact Public Safety at (607) 274-3333.
