The Handwerker Gallery intends to screen Jessica Yu's documentary, In the Realms of the Unreal, a film which chronicles the life and work of Chicago-based visionary artist, recluse, janitor, & story-crafter Henry Darger. The film will be screened on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at 5.00 p.m., but may have to be rescheduled depending upon local weather-- updates will be posted on this Intercom announcement, so stay tuned!
For much of his life, Henry Darger was almost invisible. He was an odd man — a reclusive janitor whose outside life revolved around going to church and monitoring the weather. A talented and troubled artist, Darger used large paintings and a 15,000 page epic novel titled The Realms of the Unreal to create a secret mystical world of heroic little girls fighting evil.
