Spoken word/hip-hop artist Colin Masashi “Senbei” Ehara will give a free performance at Ithaca College on Monday, Nov. 12. Titled “Re: Incarnation,” his show is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Emerson Suites. It is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity (CSCRE).
Ehara is a Yonsei — a fourth-generation Japanese American — with additional Scottish/German/Iroquois heritage. In addition to being a performer, he is a youth educator and cultural worker. He received his B.A. in American Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz and M.A. in Asian American Studies from San Francisco State University. He has shared the stage with Zion I, Native Guns, iLL-Literacy and Planet Asia, among other artists.
His program at Ithaca College will include a discussion on the connections between death and (re)birth by juxtaposing “schooling” vs. “education.” It will examine their relationships to courage, cowardice and indifference, in an effort to strengthen the process of disrupting oppressive patterns of behavior in a society and world heading rapidly toward increasing wealth/health/educational opportunity disparities. He will interweave hip-hop/spoken word performance art throughout, with a discussion to follow.
The CSCRE fosters dialogues on issues pertaining to race through its annual discussion series. The theme for this year’s series is “Suffocating Knowledge: Race, Power, Possibilities.” For more information, visit https://www.ithaca.edu/cscre/.
