The immune system has a challenge, to destroy viruses and bacteria while minimizing collateral damage to ones own tissues. There are many levels of regulation of this process that may increase or limit this damage. The presentation will cover how a newly discovered class of small RNA molecules, micro-RNA, may act as regulators of immune responses to infection by bacteria and viruses. We will also examine how infection changes the production of blood cells by the bone marrow and how this may result in blood disorders such as leukemia.
