With temperatures this weekend expected to continue to dipping into the single digits—especially at night—members of the campus community are reminded to take precautions when walking or working outdoors.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, frostbite and/or hypothermia can result from prolonged exposure to extreme cold. Body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and won’t be able to do anything about it.
Students who may be out and about at night this weekend are advised to dress properly for cold temperatures, travel in groups, and use public transportation as necessary. If you suspect someone has frostbite or hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more winter weather advice and precautions at its website.
