In one moving and beautiful act, Diosdado transports us to a Madrid kitchen on March 11, 2004, just minutes before the carefully planned attack on the city’s commuter trains during rush hour. Still considered Spain’s most deadly terrorist attack, the explosion of ten bombs on four different trains rocked the city and the country’s very existence. Our story, directed by Gipsy Fernández, weaves the lives of the immigrant house worker, Amina (Reisy Veloz), with that of her Spanish employer, Carmen (Yuberky Reyes), melding their memories and life experiences while they prepare the Morrocan soup, harira, in the comfort of Carmen’s kitchen. Though culturally dissimilar, the women grow in friendship through their discussions of their families, their traditions, and the event that would forever rewrite their lives.
Harira is one of the eleven plays that constitutes Once voces contra la barbarie del once de marzo (Eleven Voices Against the Inhumanity of the 11th of March). This collection encompasses the work of ten other Spanish playwrights, each presenting their own dramatization of the events and social-personal influences of the day. Not only does Harira immortalize the event (as the rest of the Once voces do), it also tugs at the deeper social developments of xenophobia in Spanish society that were highlighted by the attacks, and the place of Islamic practices within Spanish culture.
