Workshop for faculty & staff - Taking Students Abroad: Legal and Risk Management Issues Involving International Programs

If you are a faculty or staff member who has an interest in taking students abroad, you are invited to attend an important workshop. The Office of International Programs will be co-hosting, together with our affiliate IES Abroad (the Institute for the International Education of Students), a workshop entitled "Taking Students Abroad: Legal and Risk Management Issues Involving International Programs" on April 11, 2013

Risk management and legal issues represent an area that is becoming ever more important in study abroad programming, and something that we don't always think about first when envisioning the exciting educational opportunities we can create for students abroad. This workshop will provide a deeper understanding of the legal and risk management issues that need to be considered when traveling abroad with students.

Please note that this workshop is different from those routinely offered by the Office of International Programs (OIP) on short-term study abroad program development, and therefore faculty who have already attended the workshop lead by OIP are encouraged to participate and will find new information presented here.

Legal and Risk Issues Involving International Programs

Mr. Hoye is a leading higher education lawyer and an expert on safety, security, legal and risk issues affecting international programs. He has lead this interactive workshop numerous times at colleges and universities nationwide. The workshop is designed specifically for:

Study abroad professionals
Faculty who take students abroad;
Administrators with oversight responsibility for international programs.

In this workshop, participants will discuss:

Specific techniques that colleges and universities can use to help better protect the health and safety of their students, faculty, and staff in the context of international programs.
Case studies;
Claims and court decisions that have arisen in the context of international programs involving college students;
Proactive crisis management and risk assessment
