The African Students Association will host our first annual Africa week. This week will include a series of events that will be dedicated to promoting awareness to the public about the social, cultural, and political aspects of Africa, both historical and modern.

On Monday, April 1st, award-winning educator, author and filmmaker M.K. Asante will show and discuss clips from his films. His works include “500 Years Later,” winner of the Breaking the Chains Award from UNESCO; “The Black Candle,” named best documentary at the Africa World Documentary Film Festival; and “Motherland,” which won best documentary honors at the Pan African Film Festival and Zanzibar International Film Festival.

Described by the “Philadelphia Inquirer” as “a rare, remarkable talent that brings to mind the great artists of the Harlem Renaissance,” Asante has published several poetry collections as well as the creative nonfiction book “It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop: The Rise of the Post–Hip-Hop Generation.” “Buck,” a memoir about his youth in Philadelphia, will be published by Random House this summer.

Join us in going Back to the Roots with M.K Asante, Jr!
