How did David Corn unearth that “Mitt Romney and the 47%” video? DId it have an impact on the 2012 presidential election? What is “dark money,” where does it come from, and what impact does it have on our lives?

We’ll learn the answers to those questions and more when Mother Jones representatives Corn (Washington Bureau chief), publisher Steve Katz, and environment/reproductive rights reporter Kate Sheppard (IC ’06) accept the fifth Izzy Award for outstanding achievement in independent media.

The award ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall.

A nonprofit outlet specializing in investigative journalism, Mother Jones earned the Izzy Award by publishing impactful stories and investigations last year on topics ranging from mass shootings to “dark money” funding of both major political parties to the battle over reproductive rights.

Presented by Ithaca College’s Park Center for Independent Media, the award is named after the late I.F. “Izzy” Stone, who used his muckraking newsletter “I.F. Stone’s Weekly” to expose government deceit while championing civil liberties, racial justice and international diplomacy.

After the ceremony, the three journalists will take part in a book and magazine signing. Corn’s best-selling books include "Showdown" and  “Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War.”
