Jewish Studies is offering several exciting courses for Fall 2013: Jews in the Modern World, The Holocaust, Jewish American Writers, Elementary Hebrew, and Israeli Culture Through Literature.
Rebecca Lesses will be teaching Jews in the Modern World (JWST 20200, MWF at 10:00). This course deals with the challenges that Jews have faced in the modern world for the past 500 years, since the Expulsion from Spain in 1492. Major topics include Jewish emancipation in Europe and the Middle East, Jews in the United States, the Holocaust, and the establishment of the state of Israel.
Don Beachler, of the Politics Department, will be teaching The Holocaust (POLT 23000, MWF at 11:00). This course is an introductory survey of major issues related to the Holocaust.
Kirsten Wasson (English) will be teaching Jewish American Writers (JWST 21100, TR 4:00-5:15). This course deals with modern and contemporary Jewish literature, including both the prominent writers of the 1950s and 1960s such as Philip Roth or Isaac Bashevis Singer and those who have come to attention since then, such as Judith Krauss.
Mirit Hadar will be teaching Elementary Hebrew (HEBR 101, MWF 11:00, with an additional meeting at 8:25 or 4:00 on Thursday with a teaching assistant). This is an introduction to Hebrew, and no previous knowledge of the language is assumed.
Mirit will also teach a class on Israeli Culture through Literature (JWST 27500, MW 4:00 pm). This course explores Israeli culture and history by introducing students to a range of modern Hebrew literature (in English translation) from its early beginnings in the 1880’s up until today’s postmodern Israel.
