Beginning at 8 p.m., the School of Music’s Choir (ICC) and Symphony Orchestra (ICSO)—conducted by Lawrence Doebler and Jeffery Meyer respectively—will perform “20th Century Anniversaries: Poulenc, Britten and Lutoslawski.” The program features a solo by guest alumna soprano Jessica Julin ’02, and will also include works by William Byrd and György Ligeti.
The Lincoln Center concerts create exciting and important performance and outreach opportunities for our students. They showcase the School of Music's high level of innovation and artistry in some of the most prestigious venues in New York City.
“These performances with choir and orchestra have been the quintessential musical experience for the students in their young careers,” Doebler said. “ As our graduates move into the professional world, as this evening’s alumna Jessica Julin has done, these performances at major venues and tours have been instrumental in shaping their careers."
This year's program is one that every professional ensemble would be jealous of, featuring a diverse and fascinating program filled with brilliance and beauty—one that puts IC at the forefront of the creative celebration of several important musical anniversaries in 2013.
To that end, Meyer said, "The program exemplifies Ithaca College School of Music's creative and innovative training environment for young musicians. It’s one that simultaneously provides a solid traditional groundwork in musicianship and artistry, and at the same time encourages students to experience new musical connections that are adventurous, contemporary and relevant."
Since the early 1970s the School of Music has sponsored nine different concerts at Lincoln Center. In 1992, the concert featured five world-premiere performances of compositions commissioned by the School of Music to celebrate the centennial of Ithaca College. Ten years later, the concert celebrated the eightieth birthday of Karel Husa, and, in 2005, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana filled Avery Fisher Hall. This upcoming performance is sure to be equally as memorable and captivating.
