Please Join us at the Physics Cafe in Emerson Suites, 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 as Paola Barbara, Georgetown University, gives a talk entitled:

Beyond Gulliver’s Travels: Shrinking Matter One Dimension at a Time:

With recent advances in technology we can now embark in the discovery of materials with physical dimensions that are drastically reduced, to obtain sheets or wires that are just a few atoms thick, as well as few-atom islands. Unlike Lilliput, these flatlands, linelands and dotlands are not simple miniature versions of their macroscopic counterparts. Dr. Barbara will discuss graphene, carbon nanotubes and carbon quantum dots to illustrate the opportunities and challenges we encounter when matter is shrunk to two, one and zero dimensions.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Jill Ackerman at jackerman@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-3247. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
