I wanted to follow up as quickly as possible on the message I sent yesterday regarding the hateful graffiti left recently on a residence hall door. The investigation concluded this afternoon and the student responsible for the graffiti has been judicially referred. I would like to thank Public Safety for their aggressive investigation of this abhorrent act, beginning the moment the incident was reported.
Our individual and collective outrage over this incident gives us an opportunity to reaffirm together our values as a campus community. No one should have to endure slurs or other actions that demean an individual or group. Our diversity as a community enhances the quality of the educational experience on this campus. Any attack on that diversity is an attack on our educational mission.
I encourage everyone to please report any act of racial, religious or other group bigotry or hatred to the Office of Public Safety by calling 607-274-3333, or by leaving an anonymous voice mail message at 607-274-1060. Equally important, I ask that each one of us take responsibility to do everything possible to advance the level of mutual understanding and respect that characterizes the IC community. Let us celebrate each other, not demean each other!
