Students and faculty in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance will have more opportunities to learn from their counterparts in China in the coming years thanks to an agreement forged between Ithaca College and Shanghai University of Sport.
During a visit to Ithaca College last week, Shanghai University of Sport Chancellor Dai Jian and Ithaca College President Thomas Rochon signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore opportunities for collaboration. The agreement is valid for five years.
Possible outcomes from the partnership include exchanging faculty and students, sharing scholarly materials and publications, and offering short-term programs.
“The agreement signed this week takes to the next level a long-standing collaboration between Ithaca College and the Shanghai University of Sport,” Rochon said. “I am pleased at their recognition of the excellent quality in our programs in Health Sciences and Human Performance, and know our collaboration will be of great benefit to both institutions.
The signing concluded a visit to the college Friday, June 20 in which the Chinese delegates saw some of the school’s facilities and met with IC faculty members, including several department chairs, to discuss overlaps in their offerings. Among the professors in attendance were Annemarie Farrell of Sports Management and Media, Hongwei Guan of Health Promotion and Physical Education, Janice Elich Monroe of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Stewart Auyash of Health Promotion and Physical Education, Helene Larin of Physical Therapy, Paul Geisler of Athletic Training, and Luanne Andersson of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
Though discussions about potential relationships remained high-level during the meeting, Jian and IC faculty members were encouraged by the possibilities.
“We’re so thrilled to have Chancellor Jian and his colleagues here in Ithaca as we formally begin this partnership,” Linda Petrosino, Dean, Health Sciences and Human Performance, said. “These two institutions share many of the same values and I look forward to each helping the other expand their global perspective.”
