Hailing from Hallstead, PA, Marcia Rose — an incoming School of Music freshman double majoring in music education and piano performance — is one of 4,500 students across the U.S. to receive a 2013 National Merit Scholarship.
Fluent on both piano and violin, Rose expressed humbled appreciation toward her achievement.
“I am very honored to receive this scholarship,” she said, “and I am excited to be joining the highly talented group of faculty and students at Ithaca's School of Music.”
Widely known, the National Merit Scholarship Program is a competition for academic recognition and college scholarships, open only to college-bound high school students. College-sponsored Merit Scholarships, such as the one Rose received, provide four-year renewable awards ranging from $500 to $2,000 per year.
Acknowledging Rose’s achievement, the School of Music held an award certificate signing ceremony in the McHenry Lobby of the Whalen Center on Monday, June 24, presented by Interim Dean Craig Cummings.
“I am delighted that Marcia Rose is becoming a part of the School of Music community,” he said, “and I congratulate her on her exceptional achievement, evidenced by winning such a prestigious award.”
Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC)— responsible for determining the scholarships—is committed to identifying and honoring academically talented U.S. high school students, stimulating increased support for their education, and providing efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships.
Since its inception, NMSC has recognized 2.9 million students and provided over 377,000 scholarships worth about $1.5 billion. The honors awarded by NMSC to exceptionally able students are viewed as definitive marks of excellence.
