Saviana Stanescu, Assistant Professor of Playwriting in the Department of Theatre Arts, has completed her PhD with the National University of Theatre & Film in Bucharest, Romania.

Saviana Stanescu (Condeescu), Assistant Professor of Playwriting in the Department of Theatre Arts, has completed her PhD with the National University of Theatre & Film in Bucharest, Romania. Her dissertation: "Playwrights Re-imagining the Classics" focuses on Antigone, Medea, Phaedra, Oedipus and Iphigenia.  The work includes analysis of contemporary plays by US writers Caridad Svich, Chiori Miyagawa, Charles Mee, Lynn Nottage, Tanya Barfield, Karen Hartman, Susan Yankowitz, Ellen McLaughlin, Matthew Maguire, as well as a case-study on Saviana's work (as a playwright) with director Richard Schechner on YokastaS Redux, produced at La MaMa Theatre in New York in 2005.
Moreover, Dr. Stanescu's essay "After the Curtain - Dark Humor in New Romanian Drama" was published in the anthology At Whom are We Laughing - Humor in Romance Language Literatures, edited by Hofstra University professors Zenia Sacks Da Silva and Gregory M. Pell. (Cambridge Scholars Publishing)
