The Ithaca College community recently lost two former longtime faculty members, with the passing on August 9 in Ithaca of both Robert Congdon and Imre Tamas.
Bob Congdon grew up in Ithaca and attended the college for a year before joining the U.S. Army during World War II. He later finished his education at East Stroudsburg College and taught physical education and coached several sports at Ithaca High School.
He joined the faculty of what was then the School of Health and Physical Education, teaching phys ed and serving as an assistant coach for the varsity men’s basketball team for some 25 years. The Robert Congdon Basketball Award was created in his name to recognize the player that best exemplifies what IC basketball is all about.

Imre Tamas was born in Hungary and graduated from the School of Plant Sciences in Budapest. He immigrated to the United States during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, earning his master’s degree from Cornell and doctorate from Case Western Reserve.
In 1969 he joined the faculty of the Department of Biology, where he was recognized for his talent as a teacher and research mentor as well as for his contributions to the scholarship of plant growth and development. In 1996 he was named a Charles A. Dana Professor at the college, and following his retirement in 2002 he was named Dana Professor Emeritus of Biology.
Imre’s family has requested that any donations on his behalf be made to Ithaca College’s Flo and Jack Bernard Scholarship fund—named for his longtime biology colleagues—the Tompkins County SPCA, or the charity of one’s choice.
