“The Price of Sand” is a documentary about the frac sand mining boom in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Due to a rapid increase in demand, pure silica sand has become a valuable commodity, and mines are opening here at a rapid rate.
Following the film screening visitors can stay for a discussion with Maura Stephens, who recently spent time in the area where this was filmed--Wisconsin--as well as Minnesota and Iowa, where beautiful, ancient bluffs and hills are being blasted, scraped, bulldozed, and sliced and diced apart to get at the sand underlying them.

All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5.00 p.m.. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
