Denver, CODeborah Rifkin, Associate Professor of Music Theory at the School of Music, recently graduated from the HERS Denver Summer Institute, held July 21 – August 4, 2013 at the University of Denver.

Since 1978, the HERS Institute for Women in Higher Education at Wellesley College has annually offered women faculty and administrators the opportunity to participate in an intensive program that prepares them to be leaders in higher education.

The 70 participants selected for this year’s Institute represented 50 institutions across the U.S.  Responding to the current environment for higher education globally, the Institute had a special focus this year on Women Leaders: Facing the Challenges as We Re-Invent Higher Education. Topics studied included Understanding the Environment for Higher Education, Planning & Leading Change in the Academy, Managing & Investing Strategic Resources, Engaging Individual & Institutional Diversity, and Mapping Your Leadership Development.

Deborah Rifkin is an administrative leader in her field, having served on several editorial and governance boards for national and regional organizations. She has been at Ithaca College since 2006 and served on its faculty council since 2008. She is currently on the executive committee of faculty council. Previously, she chaired the music theory, history, and composition department.

Commenting on her achievement, Rifkin said, “The HERS institute provided an intensive and comprehensive training that will enable me to serve Ithaca College better, especially in this time of change and development. I am proud to work at an institution that values its women and supports their professional development.”

Over the past five years three women--faculty and administrators--from Ithaca College have been sponsored to participate in HERS Institutes at Bryn Mawr College, Wellesley College or the University of Denver.
