In early August, Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá – a Grammy Award-winning ensemble under the baton of guest conductor Fernando Valcárcel – performed Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann’s orchestral work Wayra at two different venues in the Colombian capital city of Bogotá.
Wayra takes inspiration from Incan accounts of the violent Spanish colonization. The work was performed to a full house and was enthusiastically received by the orchestra and the audience.
Grossmann has taught music composition at Ithaca College since 2010. He spent four weeks this summer at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH, where he completed his chamber work Whistling Vessels, a composition that integrates Peruvian pre-Columbian instruments into a concert-music ensemble. His second piano concerto, a commission from the Peruvian National Symphony, will premiere in 2014.
A new initiative this year, Grossman has also comprised a Latin American Music Festival beginning this fall in the School of Music. The festival features a series of lectures and performances centered on Latin American culture.
