IC Teatro to Perform in Cornell Conference on Democracy and Dictatorship in Latin America

09/24/13

Contributed by Annette Levine

IC Teatro will perform the play "A propósito de la duda" this Friday, September 27th, as part of the conference entitled "Democracy and Dictatorship: Past and Present" taking place at Cornell University.

"A propósito de la duda" is one of the foundational plays of the theater movement, Teatro por la identidad, devoted to raising awareness about human rights abuses in Argentina during the military dictatorship of 1976-83.

Teatro por la identidad works to raise awareness regarding the missing grandchildren of the Argentine dictatorship era. Approximately 500 babies and children were taken from their biological families, appropriated, and raised under false identities by families tied to the military junta. Grandchild 109 was just recently "recuperated" this past August. He's 38 and is now learning his true identity.

The performance follows a talk by the president of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (Grandmothers of the May Plaza), Estela de Carlotto.

Friday's event will take place from 5-7pm in Goldwin Smith Hall (room 132) on the Cornell University Campus.
