Topics for this hands-on workshop address two important components of reviewing applications: determining selection criteria in advance and screening vitas and cover letters. Participants will develop possible selection criteria for their current searches and evaluate mock vitas and cover letters with an eye toward identifying common sources of bias in the review process. Faculty search-committee chairs and members are particularly encouraged to attend.

Humans are social beings and learning is a social process. Both require interaction and connection to flourish. Do these factors undermine the effectiveness of an online class or strengthen it? In our digital, mobile society are discussion forums still the most effective tool for student-student interactions? In this webinar, Michelle Pacansky-Brock will share examples of what students identify as valuable characteristics of a "humanized" online class and identify key tips and strategies for harnessing the potential of emerging technologies to make your online class personal, meaningful, and memorable.
Michelle Pacansky-Brock is a noted online instructor, faculty development specialist, and leader in the field of online education. She is currently serving as a member of the 2014 Horizon Project Higher Education Advisory Board and is Chair-Elect for the 2014 Sloan-C International Emerging Technologies Symposium for Online Learning. Michelle is also the author of Best Practices for Teaching with Emerging Technologies and How to Humanize Your Online Class with VoiceThread. She is an online Associate Faculty at Mt. San Jacinto College, an active speaker, consultant, and has received two Sloan-C Awards for her online teaching excellence.

Richard Kiely currently serves as the Director of Engaged Learning and Research at Cornell University. In 2002, he received his PhD from Cornell University, and in 2005 was recognized nationally as a John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning for his longitudinal research that led to the development of a transformative service-learning model. His research focuses primarily on institutional models that foster sustainable campus-community partnerships, as well as student learning and faculty development in engaged learning and research.
A certificate of completion will be offered to those who attend two of the three service-learning sessions (first session was held on 9/18/13 and the third session will be held on 10/29/13 ). The series is intended to prepare IC faculty for the May 2014 CFE Excellence Institute on Service-Learning.

Linking the I to the C to C: How to Get Students to Think Integratively

At the heart of the new Integrative Core Curriculum is the e-portfolio, a space for students to build connections among their various learning experiences in and out of the classroom. An important goal of the Ithaca Seminar is to set the groundwork for students to think integratively over the next four years, developing essential metacognitive skills. However, the literature shows that this does not come naturally to students—they need scaffolded support throughout the semester, as well as interactive teacher and peer feedback. Writing’s Dr. Mary Lourdes Silva and Dr. Susan Adams Delaney will host workshops at the Center for Faculty Excellence to demonstrate effective strategies for instructors to provide that support and to help students make their thinking visible within TaskStream.
