Jonathan Ablard, Associate Professor of History and Director of Latin American Studies, presented a workshop and gave an invited lecture at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in the Sciences and Humanities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City.
The workshop, "The Use of the Concept of Medicalization in History," was conducted with an interdisciplinary working group of faculty and graduate students who are studying and researching diverse aspects of medicalization in contemporary Mexico. Ablard also gave an invited talk, "The History of Obesity in Latin America: A Moral, Medical, and Political Problem" to an audience of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and the general public.
Preliminary research on the obesity project would not have been possible without the work of Kristin McClune (History, Class of 2011) and Chris Allaire (History, Class of 2011) who enjoyed financial support from the Fred L. Emerson Humanities Collaboration Award.
