Jeffery Meyer, Director of Orchestras at Ithaca College, will conduct the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic at the 25th International New Music Festival “Sound Ways” led by Russian composer and faculty member at the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory Alexander Radvilovich. The program will include two world premieres by Russian composer Anatoly Koroliov and the young, emerging American composer Daniel Temkin. American pianist James Giles will return to the stage of Gilnka Hall to perform the world premiere of the final version of American composer Timothy Dunne’s Piano Concerto written for Giles and the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. The rest of the program is focused around two titans of the 20th century: Lutoslawski and Berio.
Meyer’s work in Russia has frequently created learning opportunities for the students at IC. In 2008, the Ithaca College Contemporary Ensemble went on tour to Russia to perform in the Sound Ways festival with a very ambitious (and very successful) program of contemporary and 20th century works. The students also had the opportunity to perform alongside Russian musicians with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic in the Russian premiere of a work by John Adams and a world premiere of a work by Alexander Radvilovich. In 2009, the Ithaca College Chamber Orchestra performed an earlier version of Timothy Dunne’s Piano Concerto in Ford Hall with Mr. Giles at the keyboard. Dunne also visited Ithaca College at that time to work with IC’s young composition students.
Meyer will remain in St. Petersburg after the performance at Glinka Hall to begin a recording of Timothy Dunne’s music which will be completed in 2014. Information about the performance can be found here.
