Patricia R. Zimmermann, professor of screen studies and codirector of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, has recently published a chapter, “Documentary as Open Space” in The Documentary Film Book, a major volume edited by Brian Winston for the British Film Institute.
The chapter is co-written with Helen DeMichiel, a transmedia designer, documentary filmmaker, and media arts advocate. It postulates a theory of open space documentary practice in new media, where collaboration, convening, dialogue, continual iterations, and migration across platforms displace analog documentary ideas about fixed structures and deductive arguments.
