Ithaca College Theatre and School of Music will cheerfully transition into spring with a presentation of Emmanuel Chabrier’s delightful opera “L’etoile.” Performances of this production will take place in Hoerner Theatre at 8 p.m. on Feb. 18, 20, 21 and 22. A 2 p.m. matinee will take place on Feb. 23.

Chabrier’s "L’etoile" premiered Nov. 28, 1877, at Offenbach's Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens. This whimsical opera tells the story of King Ouf, on the search for a suitable subject to execute as a birthday gift to himself. Hérisson de Porc-Epic and Aloès, an ambassador and his wife, arrive along with his secretary, Tapioca, and Laoula, the daughter of a neighboring monarch. The foursome travels undercover, and the princess is passed off as Hérisson’s wife. The mission of Laoula’s parents is to marry her to King Ouf, but trouble ensues when Laoula and Lazuli, a poor peddler, fall in love.
As the show progresses Ouf is unaware of the disguises, and hopes to prove his love and win over Laoula by capturing Hérisson. When Hérisson escapes he demands the peddler to be shot. A gunshot is heard, but Lazuli is nowhere to be found.
Director of Opera, Brian DeMaris says, “This sort of entertainment can divert the audience’s attention away from the weight of everyday problems. 'L’etoile' is the pinnacle of comic farce at the peak of European Romanticism. We hope you enjoy it, and try not to take it too seriously!”
The cast of “L’etoile” features Shelley Attadgie ’14 (Laoula), Chris D’Amico ’14 (Hérisson), Eric Flyte ’14 (Ouf), Rachel Ozols ’15 (Lazuli) and Ariana Warren ’16 (Aloes).
The creative team is led by music director Brian DeMaris and guest director Jeanne Slater. Timothy Rheiner ’15 is assistant director. The design of “L’etoile” was created by Tom Burch (scenic), Steve TenEyck (lighting), and Manny Garcia ‘15 (costumes). Samantha Cotton ’14 is the stage manager and Max Noonan-Pomada ‘14 is the technical director.
