Handwerker Gallery’s 'artist talk' this Thursday, Feb. 20, will feature Brooklyn and Boston-based artist Patte Loper, whose work Your Margins, Your Rivers, Your Diminutive Villages is one of two concurrent exhibitions in the space through March.
Beginning at 6 p.m. in the gallery's main lobby, attendees will have the opportunity to gain a unique perspective on the collection from the artist herself. Light refreshments will be available during the lecture, which will be followed by a brief Q&A.
The Exhibition:
The work seen in this show will be paintings and a multimedia site-specific work comprised of drawing, video, and sculptural components. Using automatic building and drawing techniques, Loper will create a piece in the gallery using the surrounding natural environment of the area as a departure point, from water pathways moving through terrain and deep woods to manicured landscapes and land used for agriculture. Because the work is generated intuitively, using surrealist automatism as a guiding principle, the work often takes unexpected forms, exploring the intersecting terrains of landscape, utopian architecture, and bodily organism.
Artist Bio:
Patte Loper was born in Colorado and grew up in Florida, where she first developed an appreciation for the ways nature and culture can overlap. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and Boston, MA where she serves on the faculty of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Her work—exhibited across the U.S. and in Europe— has been reviewed in the Italian edition of Flash Art, Artnet, and Time Out, Chicago, among others. Loper has been awarded residency fellowships by the Millay Colony, Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Center’s Swing Space.

All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5:00 p.m. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
