On Saturday February 8, Project Look Sharp directors and award-winning teachers Cyndy Scheibe and Chris Sperry visited the participants of SUNY Cortland’s Access to College, or ACE program to share a keynote presentation entitled “Media Literacy.”

The ACE program is a community outreach service sponsored by SUNY Cortland, and works to provide students from grades 8-12 with resources and services that help foster the educational aspirations to those who may otherwise be limited socially or economically. Throughout the school year, and over the summer, ACE offers educational and cultural programs for both students and parents that are designed to appeal to a variety of interests and abilities from within the student body. Additionally, these events aim to excite the students about higher education opportunities, and allow them to become involved at an early age.

The keynote “Media Literacy” focused on the integration of critical thinking and media literacy into the teaching of core content in the classroom. Through developing and providing lesson plans, media materials, training, and support for educators at all education levels, Project Look Sharp aims to help individuals of all ages develop the habits of inquiry and skills of expression they need to be critical thinkers, effective communicators, and active citizens in today’s world.  This presentation not only received favorable reception from the attendees, “the keynote speaker was excellent- very interesting, with a lot of helpful tips and resources”, but also had them looking forward to what was next, as one attendee said it provided “great tools for the future.”
