Jake Brenner, assistant professor of Environmental Studies and Sciences, Mary McKean, Environmental Studies ‘15, and Rhoda Meador, director of the Gerontology Institute, presented a workshop entitled “Grey and Green: Cultivating Active Retirees” at the 33rd annual Making Brooklyn Bloom Conference: Sowing Connections, Growing Gardeners, on March 8, 2014 at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
The team was invited to present at the event in recognition of their intergenerational environmental educational program Retirees in Service to the Environment (RISE), which is a partnership of the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences, the Gerontology Institute, and the Ithaca College Natural Lands. The Making Brooklyn Bloom Conference is a Brooklyn Botanic Garden tradition that serves as the annual kickoff event of the spring gardening season. Since 1982, this full day of activities has provided educational information on sustainable horticulture for the gardening public in New York City.
The spring 2014 RISE program is still accepting registrations from area retirees who wish to train as volunteers for the environment. Training starts on March 28.
