Welcome back! We hope your Spring Break was wonderful, and that you’re all ready for Block 4! There is a bunch of great SLI Sessions for you this block, including a wide range of sessions presented to you by our Diversity Peer Educators. They present on a large array of topics pertaining to cultural awareness, and issues in social justice and diversity. Here is a list SLI sessions they will be doing—there are multiple dates for all of these events, so check them out on the calendar in OrgSync!
Examining Privilege
“What is your relationship to power?” examines different points of access to privilege by evaluating many aspects of identity. In which areas have you have been denied access to power? In what ways have you been able to demonstrate a considerable degree of power? Participants will illustrate this relationship in order to provide visual representation to the complexity of their lives. Participants will have the opportunity for group reflection in order to share their perspectives on human power.
Microaggressions
Microaggressions can be defined as “brief and commonplace verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative…slights and insults toward people…” (2007, Sue et al).
This activity will explore the nature of microaggressions, and how this behavior affects its victims. In addition to exploring microaggressions as they relate to larger concepts of privilege and oppression, students will be encouraged to utilize the workshop as an opportunity to discuss microaggressive behavior as it occurs on the Ithaca College campus.
Community Building
There are many factors that make up an individual/ an individual’s identity as well as a community. This workshop will engage participants in learning more about themselves and what makes up a community through group activities and discussion. It will explore individual and communal values and identities. The goal of this session is to give students the opportunity to learn more about their own identity and values while learning how to contribute parts of their identity and values to their various communities.
Remember to RSVP on OrgSync at least 48 hours in advance! If you find that you can’t make it to an event you have already registered for, you can always go into OrgSync to un-RSVP or email leadership@ithaca.edu to let us know!
