On Tuesday, April 8, Ortiz will present “Hecho Farm” at 7 p.m. in the gallery. The title refers to Ortiz’s exhibits that turn an art space into a working “farm,” fleshed out with utilitarian sculptures, drawings, collages, hand-pulled screen-printed posters and multimedia works.
Ortiz, who lives and works in San Antonio, uses print, performance and film to address issues related to his experiences growing up in the bicultural landscape of South Texas.
Fusing classical icons with symbols of contemporary pop culture and an alter ego named Spaztek, he engages the public with interactive works such as wheat paste murals, communal art events, guerilla AM radio broadcasts and ephemeral street sculptures.
Ortiz has had solo exhibitions at Artspace in San Antonio and the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, and has been invited to participate in major international exhibitions and institutions, including the Louvre in Paris; EVA International in Limerick, Ireland; and San Juan Triennial in Puerto Rico.
During his visit to campus, Ortiz will also hold an open studio workshop in the Handwerker Gallery, where students interested in his work will be able to pull his prints.
