On Friday, April 25th, at 6:30 in Dillingham’s Clark Theatre, the On the Verge reading series and the New Voices Literary Festival will present a staged reading of After the Revolution, a 2010 play by Amy Herzog. The playwright will be in attendance and she will participate in a talk-back with the audience at the conclusion of the reading.
Amy Herzog is an award-winning playwright whose works have been staged Off-Broadway and in regional theatres nationwide. Among many other awards and honors, her 2011 play 4000 Miles was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and received an Obie Award for Best New American Play. After the Revolution, which Herzog wrote in 2010, takes place in 1999 and focuses on a rupture within a family of American Marxists. The main character, Emma Joseph, is a deeply committed leftist who was raised, like Herzog herself, against the backdrop of a cherished familial Communist history. At 26, Emma has crafted her activist identity and her fund-raising organization around the memory of her grandfather, a blacklisted Marxist whom she reveres because of his refusal to name names during the “red” scare. But when Emma learns that her grandfather was not, in a crucial respect, what she believed him to be, she suffers a crisis of faith that threatens to unravel her political work and all the most precious relationships in her life.
The cast for the reading will include student actors (Ariella Serur, Xavier Reyes and Georgi McCauley), faculty members in the Theatre department (Kathleen Mulligan and Michael Kaplan), and local professional actors (David Studwell, Kit Wainer and R. M. Moruzzi). The reading will be directed by Claire Gleitman, professor of English, and assistant-directed by Drew Weinstein, a student in Theatre.
