Dr. Nathan Hess, School of Music, presented a lecture-recital at the CMS Northeast Regional Conference at SUNY Potsdam on April 5 titled “Ned Rorem’s Recalling (2003) for Solo Piano: An Examination of Compositional Style and Influences.” The talk highlighted the unique features that tie together all three movements of the work, including the direct influences from composer/author Paul Bowles. The presentation concluded with a live performance of Recalling.
In February, Dr. Hess was invited to perform his “American Masters” solo program at the Phelps Mansion Museum in Binghamton as part of its Second Sunday Concert Series. The recital consisted of contemporary works by John Corigliano, Ned Rorem, George Perle, and Samuel Barber.
He performed his “American Masters” program again in mid-March at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD, where he also taught a solo piano masterclass. In late March he traveled to Stroudsburg, PA, to present a solo masterclass to local pre-college students, ages 11 to 18. The event was sponsored by Stroudsburg teachers of National Federation of Music Clubs. He ended March with a trip to West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where he presented a solo piano masterclass and also performed a duo recital consisting of sonatas by Dvorak and Richard Strauss with violin professor Sylvia Ahramjian.
