You are invited to an evening of wit and wonderment as the performance majors in the Styles of Acting course present scenes from William Shakespeare, John Ford and Oscar Wilde.
On Wednesday May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clark Theatre of Dillingham Center, students will present scenes from William Shakespeare and John Ford re-imagined for the 21st century. You will see two scenes from The Two Gentlemen of Verona, one set in a fraternity house and the other set on a reality TV show. From Twelfth Night, the first meeting of Viola and Olivia will be set in a brothel. A scene between Giovanni and Isabella from John Ford's revenge tragedy 'Tis Pity She's a Whore will be set at the Sochi Winter Olympics.
In a somewhat more traditional fashion, we will present two scenes from Oscar Wilde's consummate comedy of manners The Importance of Being Earnest. You will see the famous tea and muffin scene as well as the interview between Jack Worthing and Lady Bracknell, the latter of whom will be played by--well, you will just have to see for yourself.
Oscar Wilde wrote in The Importance of Being Earnest: "The truth is rarely pure and never simple." Never has this truism been truer than in our presentation of "Wilde about Shakespeare."
The presentation is free of charge and, due to the updated context, suitable for mature audiences.
