The new Oxford Handbook of Sondheim Studies will feature an essay by IC Theatre Arts Assistant Professor Garrett Eisler among its collection of new perspectives on the work of Stephen Sondheim, the great composer-lyricist of the modern musical theatre.
Soon to be released by Oxford University Press, on June 2, The Oxford Handbook of Sondheim Studies includes a total of 27 new essays by scholars of both theatre and music covering Sondheim's entire career to date. Eisler's essay focuses on his most recent work, Road Show (2008), interpreting it as a sardonic statement on "The American Dream" while also documenting the musical's troubled development process through three different incarnations over ten years.
About the volume, Oxford University Press writes:
"Focusing on broad groups of issues relating to the music and the production of Sondheim works, rather than on biographical questions about the composer himself, the handbook represents a cross-disciplinary introduction to comprehending Sondheim in musicological, theatrical, and socio-cultural terms."
