The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen LGBT themed film series will show the documentary “Jihad for Love” on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The 7 p.m. screening in Textor 101 is free and open to the public.

Filmmaker Parvez Sharma traveled to 12 countries to tell the stories of Islam’s most unlikely storytellers: lesbian and gay Muslims. Looking beyond a hostile and war-torn present, the film reclaims the Islamic concept of a greater Jihad — whose true meaning is akin to “an inner struggle” or “to strive in the path of God” — allowing its remarkable subjects to move beyond the narrow concept of Jihad as holy war.

“A Jihad for Love” was named Outstanding Documentary at the 2009 GLAAD Media Awards and Best Documentary at both the Torino and Milan 2008 International Lesbian and Gay Film Festivals.

The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services. For more information, visit www.ithaca.edu/lgbt.
