Screening and Discussion

Post-screening discussion with Jeff Cohen, Park Center for Independent Media, Ithaca College and Lt. Marlon Byrd, Ithaca Police Department.  Moderated by Stewart Auyash, associate professor of public health, Ithaca College.

This dramatic thriller is based on the remarkable story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. He investigates the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic. He further alleges the CIA was aware of major dealers smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and then used the profits to arm the Nicaraguan rebels. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop, Webb continues digging, uncovering a conspiracy with explosive implications. From the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C.  his muckraking journey threatens his career, his family, and his life.

Bios of Discussion speakers:

Marlon Byrd is a Lieutenant with the Ithaca Police Department (IPD).  He is a twenty-three year veteran of the IPD, where he also served as a detective conducting investigations into drugs and other crimes. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He has appeared as an expert commentator on CNN on race and policing related to the Ferguson shooting. He is also a frequent public speaker for the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival and other community events, discussing issues ranging from the drug wars, race issues and public policy, community issues,  and the ethics of police work.
