The Cine con ¡Cultura!  Latin American Film Festival continues this Tuesday, October 7th, at 7 pm with a screening of The Golden Dream / La Jaula de Oro (Mexico, 2013) at Cinemopolis in downtown Ithaca.  $6 for students, $7.50 adults.

The Golden Dream.  Directed by Diego Quemada-Díez.  NR. 108 minutes. Three Guatemalan Teens decide to leave their impoverished community and make the treacherous journey through Mexico to cross undocumented into the U.S. They are soon joined by a young Mexican migrant, who comes from a non-Spanish-speaking indigenous community.  Traveling atop freight trains towards the northern border, they endure incredible hardships, violence, and humiliation along the way.  Bonds of love and friendship unite them as they seek the courage to struggle against despair.  This award-winning drama takes its title from a hit 1980s song, "La jaula de oro," which translates as "The Golden Cage."

This screening at Cinemopolis presents a rare opportunity, as this film has not been widely released in the U.S. It will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles. There will also be a discussion session after the film with Mary Jo Dudley, director of the Cornell Farmworker program. She will be sharing her knowledge about migrant workers in in central NY.

The Cine con ¡Cultura! Latin American Film Festival is co-sponsored by Ithaca College's Latin American Studies Program; the LGBT Education, Outreach and Services; and the Department of Modern Languages, among other local cosponsors.
