CSCRE Discussion Series to Host Speaker on Internet Use by Feminist Women of Color

Digital media expert Lisa Nakamura will discuss how microblogging sites like Tumblr.com have become rallying points for feminist woman of color — and how the ideals and theories found in early woman of color feminist texts have found a new life online — in a free public talk at Ithaca College.

Nakamura studies the emergence and immense popularity of racially themed websites that are created by for and about people of color. She is the co-facilitator for FemTechNet, a network of feminist scholars teaching open and connected courses on feminism and technology and researching gender and politics in online spaces. She serves as the Gwendolyn Calvert Baker Collegiate Professor of American Cultures and Screen Arts and Cultures, and as coordinator of the Digital Studies Program, at the University of Michigan.

Nakamura’s books include “Digitizing Race: Visual Cultures of the Internet,” winner of the Asian American Studies Association 2010 book award in cultural studies, and “Cybertypes: Race, Ethnicity and Identity on the Internet.”
