"Intimate Apparel" is about Esther, an African American seamstress living in Lower Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century. Through the story of her life, the audience experiences private moments and emotions between friends, loved ones, and complete strangers. These moments transcend the societal barriers of the era, casting aside race, religion, and social class, revealing to the audience the fundamental basis of human relationships.

Lynn Nottage is a Pulitzer Prize and Obie Award winning playwright. According to the production’s dramaturg Danica Kelley, Nottage “was inspired to write "Intimate Apparel" when she discovered a photograph of her great-grandmother, a seamstress who had a correspondence with a man working on the Panama Canal. This is all Nottage knew of her great-grandmother, and her quest to discover more resulted in this play.” The play first premiered at Center Stage in 2003, and then debuted off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre the following year. Among the numerous awards the off-Broadway production won was the 2004 Steinberg New Play Award.

The cast of "Intimate Apparel" includes Eunice Akinola ’17, Kelly Fairbrother ’15, Oghenero Gbaje ’17, Annie L. Jefferson ’17, Daniel Krackhardt ’18, Donovan Lockett ’15, Caroline Maloney ’18, Sandra Sackey ’18, Maggie Thompson ’15, and Cam Wenrich ’17.
