Two weeks ago, members of the Ithaca College community made more than 140 “Sunny Grams” at IC Project Sunshine’s first independent event.

IC Project Sunshine is part of a national nonprofit organization that provides free education, recreational, and social programs to children facing medical challenges and their families. The local organization meets weekly to knit and crochet frequently requested items, such as hats, blankets, and booties, which are sent to the national organization and are then distributed to pediatric medical facilities.

You don't need any experience knitting or crocheting to get involved, which is student organization president Caitlin Wormsley’s favorite part about the group. She said, “After a few weeks of practice we start them on an easy project, such as a baby hat, and it is a huge accomplishment to complete it. Working on something from start to end that is going to such a good cause really excites people, and I love seeing that when they turn their projects in.”

These small acts of good help make a child’s day brighter. According to Kayli McGlynn, Social Media & Events Coordinator for IC Project Sunshine, “Cards for Kids was an event where we invited people from the community and Ithaca College to come make Sunny Grams (greeting cards) with us.  It was a huge success and we made over 140 Sunny Grams to send out. It was so nice to see little kids decorating cards and having a blast doing a good deed.”

IC Project Sunshine regularly partners with other student organizations, which helps both organizations be successful. In December, the student organization is partnering with Active Minds to teach people how to knit. “Participating in these events is wonderful because it gets people excited about what our organization does, and it’s great to see that kind of enthusiasm in people,” said Wormsley.

This was the first time that the student organization hosted an independent event. McGlynn encourages all student organization leaders to not be afraid to try something that has never been done, because there is a chance that people will really like it.
