Yesterday during its annual meeting in Scottsdale, AZ, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) announced the appointment of Ithaca College School of Music Dean Karl Paulnack to the Commission on Accreditation.

At the event, Dean Paulnack also spoke during a series of workshops on the theme of “Dealing with Difficult Situations.” His presentation, “Power, Authority and Control (only two of these are real)” explored the impact of authority on group psychodynamics. He also co-chaired a two-day training workshop for new evaluators serving on visiting teams.

“I’m tremendously honored to have been elected by my colleagues," Paulnack said, "and I'm looking forward to the enormous benefits this appointment will bring to the School of Music. Within this position, I will get to see literally hundreds of different ways of doing things—dozens of different chamber music programs, audition procedures, budgets, marketing approaches, curricula—numerous options for how a school of music might do something. It will be a great source of ideas and help me think more broadly, outside of my own personal experiences."

Paulnack also noted that since NASM is a national organization, his affiliation will make Ithaca College more visible to hundreds of deans and directors of music programs, particularly in geographic regions where the college might not be as well known.

The 18 commissioners of NASM comprise the body formally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to adjudicate matters of accreditation for hundreds of departments, schools, and colleges of music in the United States. They also determine which schools meet standards agreed upon by member institutions.
