Dr. Abraham Mulugetta, Chair of Finance and International Business Department, School of Business, and Dr. Yuko Mulugetta, Director of Enrollment Planning, presented "Exploring the Use of Big Data in Strategic Business Education: A Case Study Approach" on October 25th at the Big Data and Analytics Educational Conference (EDCON) 2014 sponsored by IBM, Ryerson University in Canada, and the University of Derby in U.K.
The unprecedented growth in the importance of Big Data and Analytics has created a situation where the demand for relevant skills is outpacing the ability of educational institutions to keep up. The conference aims to bring educators together with industry to discuss how to address and close the skills gap with programs for undergraduates, graduate students, working professionals, and current and future executives, according to the conference website.
Dr. Abraham Mulugetta discussed the unique hands-on education offered by The Center for Trading and Analysis of Financial Instruments (The Trading Room) at IC’s School of Business. He emphasized the importance of learning through real activities, including investment decision making; initiation and execution of trades; portfolio formation and risk evaluation; as well as assessment of portfolio position and performance evaluation against benchmarks.
The core of such learning activities is analyzing financial big data through specialized analytics called Bloomberg Professional and Eikon developed by Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters respectively, and other tools including: Data Stream, Morningstar, Valueline, Russell Investments, and @RISK and Decision Tools Suite.
“Our graduates are very successful at Wall Street and other parts of the world, working hard for large financial institutions including JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Credit Suisse, CITI, Bank of America, UBS, PWC, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg and others,” Abraham stated.
Dr. Yuko Mulugetta added the successful use of big data and analytics for enrollment management. This fall, IBM recognized the division of Enrollment and Communication of Ithaca College as a “Smarter Planet” organization for its leadership in creating dynamic and positive changes in the global education community through smarter use of big data and analytics.
