Retired Music Professor Malcolm Lewis Dies

Ithaca College music graduate and retired professor Malcolm Lewis passed away on December 15 at Cayuga Medical Center. He was 89.

Lewis entered the college in 1941, but his education was interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to finish his studies, receiving a B.S. in Music Education and a B.M. and M.M. in Music Composition. Following postgraduate work in music theory and composition at Juilliard and New York University, he began teaching in Montana, where he served as president of the Billings Art Institute.

He returned once again to the college in 1962 to teach piano, music theory, and music composition, retiring from the School of Music in 1988. Lewis earned a number of commissions over the years, composing works for piano, orchestra, percussion ensemble, band, vocal and choral music, and chamber ensembles.
