The Department of English will be offering a section of ENGL 11300 Introduction to Poetry during the first session of summer courses, from May to June of 2015.  Students who are not English majors will be eligible to receive ICC Themes and Perspectives credit under either the "Identities" or "Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation" theme and under the "Humanities" perspective.

Professor Michael Stuprich will guide the class through a wide-ranging survey of poetry in order to help students become familiar with different poetic forms and voices, as well as with the poetic conventions of different historical periods.  Among the questions to be considered are:  why is poetic language so different from the language of prose?  How do we understand the role of the speaker in lyric poems?  Can poetry be used as a medium to convey philosophical thinking as well as emotion?

The class will meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:15am-12:15pm in Friends 301.  It will run from May 26, 2015, to June 26, 2015.  For more information on the course, please contact Prof. Stuprich via email at stuprich@ithaca.edu.
