Maria DiFrancesco, associate professor of Spanish in the Department of
Modern Languages and Literatures, has been elected as the second vice
president of the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA). An
inauguration ceremony will occur at the next NeMLA Convention in
Toronto, Canada, to be celebrated in April 2015. After serving one
year as second vice president, DiFrancesco will advance to first vice
president, and then president.
NeMLA is the regional branch for the northeast United States of the
Modern Language Association (MLA). It is an umbrella organization that
represents the interests of all careers, universities, programs, and
scholars in the disciplines of languages, literatures and cultures,
including English across the nation. NeMLA was founded in 1967 and
holds yearly conventions that provide the opportunity to further
advance academic debates on literature and culture across languages
and geographical areas of cultural production. Annual conferences
include guest speakers, panel discussions, and workshops with
