As winners of the recent 2015 IC Concerto Competition, Piano Performance sophomore, Junwen Liang (from the studio of Charis Dimaras) and Clarinet Performance & Music Education junior, Ryan Pereira (from the studio of Michael Galvan) will appear as concerto soloists with the Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jeffery Meyer this Sunday, March 1, 2015, at 4:00 pm in Ford Hall at the Whalen Center for Music.
This annual School of Music spring event, which traditionally showcases some of the best student musicians in collaboration with IC’s top orchestral ensemble, will feature Mr. Liang in Russian Romantic composer’s, Alexander Scriabin’s (1872-1915) Piano Concerto in f-sharp minor, Op. 20 and Mr. Pereira in Spanish contemporary composer’s, Oscar Navarro’s (b. 1981) Clarinet Concerto No. 2. Written in 1896 by a then 24-years-old Scriabin (whose 100th death anniversary, is incidentally celebrated this year), his Piano Concerto, Op. 20 represents his only experiment in this genre: It is structured in traditional 3-mvt form (fast-slow-fast) and it is full of lyrical melodies, searing dramatic gestures and vintage Russian pathos. A recent addition to Mr. Navarro’s catalogue of works, his Clarinet Concerto No. 2 (2012) is an exuberant, cinematic score of great variety, tremendous energy and infectious Latin rhythms. This concert, which will also include orchestral works by Boston-based, American contemporary composer, Michael Gandolfi (IC’s 2014-15 Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition) and the iconic masterpiece, The Pines of Rome by early 20th-century Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi is free and open to the public.
