After an extensive national search, the School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of current faculty member David Pacun as associate dean.
Pacun, serving as interim associate dean since 2012, is an accomplished music theorist who has served on the School of Music faculty since 2000.
In recent years, he has provided outstanding leadership in his interim role, overseeing academic operations for students, faculty, and staff, as well as managing several major building renovation projects and operational transitions within the school.
“David’s service as interim associate dean was extremely helpful to me as a relative newcomer to the college,” said School of Music Dean Karl Paulnack, “He was a key member of my transition team and a vital part of the core administrative group for the School of Music. This is a big job. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t turn to him for help with one thing or another, and I know our students rely on his office even more than I do. I look forward to his ongoing and increasing leadership here.”
A graduate of Swarthmore College, Pacun completed his graduate work at the University of Chicago, where he studied music analysis with Robert P. Morgan and music theory with Richard Cohn.
His current research interests include the variation sets of Johannes Brahms, music theory pedagogy, and early 20th century Japanese music, especially the works of Yamada Kosaku.
Paulnack further noted his appreciation for the search committee’s effort in bringing Pacun into this role.
“I am sincerely thankful to Associate Dean Bryan Roberts for chairing this committee, to Associate Dean Michael Richardson, and the committee members Peter Rothbart, Derek Wallace, Debbie Martin, and Derrick Fox,” Paulnack said.
Pacun will officially assume the responsibilities of his position in May 2015.
