Singing Workshop for LGBTQ People and Allies, April 17 in the Handwerker Gallery

04/12/15

Contributed by Luca Maurer

Come explore your voice in a fun, informal workshop with touring singer-songwriter Eli Conley at 12 noon on Friday April 17 in the Handwerker Gallery. Total beginners to experienced singers are welcome! Queer and transgender folks all too often find spaces focused on singing lacking relevance to our lives, awareness of our needs, and commitment to collective liberation. It is a powerful act for LGBTQ people and our straight and cisgender allies to find the power in our voices, listen deeply to each other as singers and raise our voices together in song.

Eli Conley is a singer-songwriter, voice teacher and social justice activist based in Berkeley, California. As a gay transgender man with a background in community organizing, Eli has a commitment to working within diverse LGBTQ communities to build up our collective strength, power, creativity, and resilience. Eli performs and tours as an indie folk artist, and is a former member of the Grammy award-winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus. He has studied classical singing at Oberlin Conservatory, jazz singing at Berklee College of Music, and Somatic Voicework - The LoVetri Method at the Contemporary Commercial Music Institute at Shenandoah Conservatory.

This event is in collaboration with our friends at the Handwerker Gallery and takes place in the Handwerker Gallery. Sponsored by the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach & Services and the Handwerker Gallery.
